President's letter of Cincinnati Wildflower Preservation Society- May 2013

You’ve waited and waited and waited and the wild flowers are finally here! We’ve been on some great hikes in spectacular locations already this year and are looking forward to the next ones.

We are very sad to report that Becky Johnson, long-time member of the Wild Flower Society, passed away April 23. Becky was a friend to many in the Society and will be missed. She loved wildflowers and was a great companion on field trips, always cheerful with a great sense of adventure and fun. There will be a memorial service May 6 at 4:00 pm at Northern Hills Fellowship, 460 Fleming Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45231.

The CWFPS sponsored a silent auction at the Ohio Botanical Symposium to help fund Ohio’s State Nature Preserves. We are happy to report that the auction was very popular and raised over $1300. DNAP greatly appreciates the Society and those who supported the auction for helping during these difficult times.

We’d like to hear your ideas for lectures and field trips. Please let me know if you have a topic of interest or a specific speaker you’d like to hear or locations where you’d like to have a field trip.

At our annual meeting in March, the Society re-elected Bob Bergstein, Rob Repasky and Steve Slack for another three-year term. Elizabeth Durrell and Randy Johnson were also voted onto the board to take the positions of Steve Albert and Theresa Culley. We greatly appreciate Steve and Theresa’s service on the board. We have thoroughly enjoyed Steve’s minutes for all these years!

Our annual donations were $100 to sponsor the Midwest Native Plant Conference, $200 to Arc of Appalachia (for land acquisition), $200 to Western Wildlife Corridor (for land acquisition), $200 to Avon Woods and $260 for a student to attend Science Camp at the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Edge of Appalachia preserves in Adams County.

I hope to see a few of you at our display during the extremely educational 5th Annual Midwest Native Plant Conference in Dayton, which promises to be spectacular once again.

Hope to see you on the trail soon!

Christine Hadley, President
